Highlands has seen consistent growth in development over the past few decades, primarily in the form of residential construction. These neighborhoods are only a few minutes from downtown Denver and offer residents an active lifestyle. At 177 acres, Sloan Lake Park is Denver's second-largest park and home to the city's largest lake. There is something for everyone at this location, with two playgrounds, tennis courts, several sporting fields, boating, basketball courts, multi-use trails, and picnic spaces. Sloan’s Lake is a popular spot for swimmers, paddle boarders, and cyclists during the warmer months.
 

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Toast Wine & Spirits, which has been in business since 2006, is a wine and spirits shop that imports products worldwide. The knowledgeable staff, many of whom have worked as sommeliers, selects wines that are both reasonably priced and of high quality for both everyday dining and special occasions. Ruby Jane Boutique, Kate Maller Jewelry, Rustic Thread Boutique, 32nd Avenue Books, Common Era, and Wordshop are just a handful of the top stores in the Highlands.
 
These two neighborhoods have a vibrant food scene. Some of the best and cheapest breakfast burritos in town can be had at Santiago's, while Chili Verde serves up expertly prepared Mexican snacks, and Rise & Shine Biscuit Kitchen serves up biscuits made from scratch.
 
Several unique restaurant concepts are housed in repurposed shipping containers at the innovative Avanti Food & Beverage. In one convenient location, you can sample a wide range of delicious, reasonably priced dishes prepared by talented chefs. Restaurants like Linger and El Five, which all boast panoramic views of the city, are well worth a visit for their food and atmosphere. Other notable restaurants in the area include Edible Beats, Ohana Island Kitchen, The Patio at Sloans, Root Down, and Little Man Ice Cream.
 

Things to Do

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, held annually in July on Sloan's Lake, is a highlight for the local community. There are genuine boat races and other activities such as performances, Taste of Asia food vendors, shopping booths, and more. Sloan's Lake Park covers over 290 acres of green space and water. There are numerous playgrounds, hiking and bike routes, boating, fishing, and sports fields.
 
Highlands Square, located at 32nd and Lowell, is a hotspot for locals and visitors. The Highlands Street Fair and the Highlands Farmer’s Market are just two of the many events at Highlands Square. The Highlands Street Fair is free for everyone and includes live music and fun activities for the whole family. Mostly grass, Highland Park is a lovely place to stroll or picnic while taking in the neighborhood's ancient architecture. Highland Park is a nice spot to take kids because it offers a library branch (the Woodbury Branch Library) and a playground.
 
The Historic Elitch Garden Theatre is a famous landmark in the Highland neighborhood. The theater is still used for occasional community events, film screenings, and educational activities.
